Israel, 2012

2012 April 27
by Bill

Karen and I had an opportunity to visit Israel in April of 2012. Ten days with 52 friends from our church, Seacoast Christian Church of Mt. Pleasant, SC. Our pastor made the trip last year and set us up this year with a fabulous tour guide, Marc Tournage of the Holy Lands Study Group which is part of the Assembly of God Church. Marc has a Ph.D. in Biblical Studies and archeology. His knowledge of this area and enthusiastic willingness to share it made the trip much like drinking from a fire hose! We went from early to late every day and I don’t think that we missed too much. Mark knows where the real sites are and that is where we spent our time rather than “traditional” sites that are sometimes not even close. We visited Cesarea, Mt. Carmel, Nazareth, Megiddo, Bethsaida, Korazin, Capernaum, The Sea of Galilee, Tiberius, were baptized in the Jordan River, Arabel, Sepphorus, Bet Alpha, Bethlehem, Masada, the Dead Sea, Ein Gedi and Qumran (Dead Sea Scrolls). Then we arrived in Jerusalem; the Western Wall, Mt. of Olives, assorted churches and more sites in the Old City than I can list.

Ably assisted by an orthodox native, Ilan Aharoni, added an additional layer to our information load. Ilan’s passion for his nation and understanding of our interests was the icing. One highlight for me was a special tour of the Holocaust Museum on national remembrance day. I have known of this crime against humanity all of my life but seeing this presentation, especially on this day and in this place was life changing.

Civilization, nations and empires that have tried to destroy the Jewish people:

Ancient Egypt………..Gone
Philistines………….Gone
Assyrian Empire………Gone
Babylonian Empire…….Gone
Persian Empire……….Gone
Greek Empire…………Gone
Roman Empire…………Gone
Byzantine Empire……..Gone
Crusaders……………Gone
Spanish Empire……….Gone
Nazi Germany…………Gone
Soviet Union…………Gone
Iran…………………??

The Jewish People; the smallest of nations but with a Friend in the Highest of Places! So, BE NICE!
