Dwight Eisenhower once said, “A bold heart is half the battle.” How do we get there? Encouragement. To encourage people is to help them gain courage that they might otherwise not posses. Courage to face the day, to take risks, to make a difference.

In Numbers 6: 24-26, the Lord instructed Moses to instruct Aaron to bless the nation of Israel thus, and they were encouraged.

“May the Lord bring good to you and keep you. May the Lord make His face shine upon you and be kind to you. May the Lord show favor toward you, and give you peace.

Encouragement motivates. Encouragement changes everything.

The first time I heard this I was living outside of Washington, DC and my home office was in Irvine, California. Occasionally I would travel out to the home office for quick meetings but the majority of my work was by phone and Fax. (This predated email.) There were several customer service representatives that I dealt with almost every day, but had not met due to the rapid growth of the company and my travel schedule.

I received a teaching on motivation and encouragement that moved me to write some “thank you” notes on some new cards that my company had recently sent to me. I sat down at an early computer (a Tandy 8000 as I recall) and I wrote words of encouragement to my children, my wife, several dozen friends and to the customer service representative who worked my territory.

Several months later I was in the home office and during a break in meetings was able to go and visit the customer service area. There, hanging on the cubical wall of my representative, was my note. She read it every day.

Jesus encouraged people, and said:

“We who are strong in the faith ought to help the weak in order to build them up in the faith.” Rom 15:1

Rick Warren recently shared that we all need confidence. “When you know that someone believes in you, it brings out your best. Jesus did this with the Apostle Peter. Peter’s name, Petros, meant pebble. But Jesus said, “Pebble, you are going to be a rock. I’m giving you a new name.”

At the time Peter was anything but a rock. He was Mr. impulsive and Mr. Foot-in-Mouth, but Jesus did not tell Peter what he was, He told him what he could be. Jesus encouraged him to live up to his potential.

John Maxwell’s book, “Encouragement Changes Everything” sets forth some great guidelines for encouragement. He points out that everyone needs encouragement. And everyone, both young and old, successful and less than successful, unknown or famous who receives encouragement is changed by it.

An encouraging word from a teacher can change the direction of a child’s life and encouragement from a spouse can change and even save a marriage.

When you give encouragement it must be genuine, given from the heart with sincerity. You also need to give it generously, don’t be stingy with encouragement. Your family needs to hear it frequently especially if you are the head of the household or you are the organizational leader, and it needs to be specific to the task. General encouragement is OK but specifics are what we are looking for.

When Dr. Cho started his ministry in South Korea he prayed for a bicycle so that he could get around Seoul easier. He prayed and prayed but no bicycle arrived. One day he asked the Lord why his prayers went unanswered. The Lord replied, “Because you have not told me what kind of bicycle you want. Red? Black? One speed? Two speed, Three speed? How will you know that I have answered your prayers unless they are specific?” Dr. Cho modified the prayer and the next day received the exact bicycle that he prayed for.

Specific encouragement motivates and directs positive activity.

John Maxwell has said,

“God’s love for us gives us the reason to encourage others.
God’s love in us gives us the ability to encourage others.
God’s love through us gives us the way to encourage others.”

Encouragement can motivate a person to go further, accomplish more and grow faster than they thought possible when someone else thinks they can and says so. Encouragement enables us to persevere like nothing else. And, it helps us as we encourage others. The way you treat them is often the way they become.

While we are on the subject, encourage yourself. Truett Cathy says’ “How do you find someone who needs encouragement? That person is breathing.”

If you have no one to lift you then do not allow yourself to worry when you are doing your best, hurry when success depends on accuracy, think evil of another until you have all of the facts…and even then you may want to re-consider. Don’t believe something is impossible without trying it, waste time on the trivial, harbor bitterness towards God or another person or imagine that good intentions are a satisfactory excuse. (Remember, we tend to judge ourselves by our intentions and others by their actions.)

My goal as a manager is to create an environment where those who are in my employ have the opportunity to grow and succeed way beyond what I have accomplished. I let them make mistakes, develop alternative systems and products and encourage them along the way. Charles Schwab says, “I have yet to find the man, however his station, who did not do better work and put forth greater effort under a spirit of approval than under a spirit of criticism.”

It works for me.

I have tried to be an encourager as a husband and as a father. The results have been wonderful. My wife is on her way to her doctorate in the area of her passion, my son is about to launch a music product that he developed, my oldest daughter has a successful voice-over business and my youngest daughter is a full-time praise and worship minister. All are following their passions. I do not believe that they would be where they are without the encouragement of others and me in their lives.

How to fight discouragement

Reject rejection, see mistakes as temporary, see failures as isolated incidents, keep expectations positive and realistic, focus on strengths, vary your approach to achievement, bounce back!

At this writing the duly elected Democratic Senators from Wisconsin are hiding out in hotels in Illinois. Not because they are in fear of their lives but because they don’t want to do what they are paid to do; vote up or down on an issue that will make the difference between solvency and financial disaster in their state. They are shirking their sworn responsibility, violating their oaths and in general, acting like Democrats. It has been said that “cowards die a thousand deaths but a hero only once.” It must be hard to be them today, but they made the choice and now they get to live with it

On Monday of this week (2/21/11) Greta Van Sustren of Fox News caught up with and interviewed one of these fine Americans. One of her very early statements was that she was a “woman of Faith.”

Now understand, I am a single issue voter. If you support abortion you do not get my vote. The Democratic platform supports the woman’s right to choose (which is code for pro-abortion). I listened to what she had to say and then thought that her ego may dictate that she have a Face Book page. I was right. The temptation to drop her a note overcame me. My challenge to her was her stand on abortion as a “woman of Faith,” not the obvious AWOL condition. There is an obvious incongruity to this statement and that position so I posed a question about it. Her response led to a dialog about duty, God and character. The exchange took several days and was most entertaining…but I’m getting old and it doesn’t take much these days. Suffice to say that we (she) agreed to disagree and I moved on.

Now a similar issue has driven the “hero’s” of the Democratic Party out of Indiana with New Jersey and Ohio to follow suit. We are watching union goons push people around, threaten them and, in short, and in my humble opinion, act very un-American. Prison is too good a place for this trash. I personally have experienced union goons at “work.” If you have ever worked at a convention in a union town like Philadelphia or New York you know what I mean. Having to pay a union electrician $150.00 or more to plug an extension cord into a receptacle is an example of the level of silliness that we have to deal with if we decide to attend a show in some cities. Refuse and threats follow or your equipment is somehow damaged or lost. I choose to pass on the experience. My filter is broken and I have trouble keeping my mouth shut.

Now understand, I get the reason for unions. In the 40’s, 50’s and part of the 60’s they were needed to stabilize the work environment. But now, the tail is wagging the dog, especially with public sector employees. Why should I, the taxpayer, have to pay for better benefits for government workers than I get for myself and my employees? Collective bargaining only works with a corporation who can adjust pricing to meet the demands of the workers. (Think GM. It is estimated that over 50% of the price of a Detroit manufactured car goes to union benefits!) That does not work when a tax base is used. It places too much of a burden on those who can’t afford it. Somehow this escapes college educated teachers…maybe its the math.

Now my beloved firefighters are getting into the act. They need to be careful. In NYC the system is broken and it is just a matter of time before it all collapses. Take this example:

In the New York Fire Department (FDNY) a member’s retirement amount is based on his last two year’s earnings. This includes overtime. So, what they do is work “mutuals” where they cover another firefighter’s duty time, work holidays, load up on overtime and so forth. A friend of mine was a Lieutenant and retired after 30 years in 1998. He worked his butt off in his last two years and his retirement take home pay is now equal to that of a Battalion Chief! The bad news is that it took 15 firefighters working full time to support his income and when they retire it will take 350 firefighters to support them and so forth. The system is simply non-supportable. Multiply this by all of the police and firefighters in NYC, add the sanitation workers and teachers and you get the picture. Disaster is moments away.

Wisconsin has this same problem, but with less people. The Governor has a plan to stabilize it and to me his plan makes sense. Sadly there are otherwise well educated people who not only don’t get it but are working hard to stop him by not showing up to vote. They have no plan to fix it, just to wield power that they really don’t have. Somehow they don’t get that the bucket is empty. None of what they are doing will place a single dime into the bucket. What am I missing?

Reagan would have fired them all and let the system fix itself. Where are the Reagans when we need them? Where are the people of character? Where are the leaders? I see none. We have an empty suit in the White House and his minions hiding in hotels out of the reach of the law. What a sad situation we have allowed to happen in what was once a great country.

This is very interesting material. Glen Beck has been developing material to show all the ties that George Soros has through the nation and world along with his goals. This article is written by Steve Kroft from 60 Minutes. It begins to piece together the rise of Obama and his behavior in leading the nation along with many members of Congress (in particular the Democrats, such as the election of Nancy Pelosi as the minority leader in Congress).

If you have wondered where Obama came from and just how he quickly moved from obscurity to President, or why the media is “selective” in what we are told, here is the man who most probably put him there and is responsible. Who is Obama? Obama is a puppet and here is the explanation of the man or demon that pulls his strings. It’s not by chance that Obama can manipulate the world. I don’t think he knows how to tie his shoe laces. Who Is George Soros? He brought the market down in 2 days. Here is what CBS’ Mr. Steve Kroft’s research has turned up. It’s a bit of a read, and it took 4 months to put it together. “The main obstacle to a stable and just world order is the United States.” George Soros

George Soros is an evil man. “He’s anti-God, anti-family, anti-American, and anti-good.” He killed and robbed his own Jewish people. What we have in Soros, is a multi-billionaire atheist, with skewed moral values, and a sociopath’s lack of conscience. He considers himself to be an elitist world class philosopher, despises the American way, and just loves to do social engineering and change cultures.

György Schwartz, better known to the world as George Soros, was born August 12, 1930 in Hungary. Soros’ father, Tivadar, was a fervent practitioner of the Esperanto language invented in 1887, and designed to be the first global language, free of any national identity. The Schwartz’s, who were non-practicing Jews, changed the family name to Soros, in order to facilitate assimilation into the Gentile population, as the Nazis spread into Hungary during the 1930’s.

When Hitler’s henchman Adolf Eichmann arrived in Hungary, to oversee the murder of that country’s Jews, George Soros ended up with a man whose job was confiscating property from the Jewish population. Soros went with him on his rounds.

Soros has repeatedly called 1944 “the best year” of his life. 70% of Mr. Soros’s fellow Jews in Hungary, nearly a half-million human beings, were annihilated in that year, yet he gives no sign that this put any damper on his elation, either at the time or indeed in retrospect. During an interview with “Sixty Minute’s” Steve Kroft, Soros was asked about his “best year.”

KROFT: My understanding is that you went out with this protector of yours who swore that you were his adopted godson.

SOROS: Yes. Yes.

KROFT: Went out, in fact, and helped in the confiscation of property from your fellow Jews, friends and neighbors.

SOROS: Yes. That’s right. Yes.

KROFT: I mean, that sounds like an experience that would send lots of people to the psychiatric couch for many, many, years. Was it difficult?

SOROS: No, not at all. Not at all, I rather enjoyed it.

KROFT: No feelings of guilt?

SOROS: No, only feelings of absolute power.

In his article, Muravchik describes how Soros has admitted to having carried some rather “potent messianic fantasies with me from childhood, which I felt I had to control, otherwise they might get me in trouble.” Be that as it may, after WWII, Soros attended the London School of Economics, where he fell under the thrall of fellow atheist and Hungarian, Karl Popper, one of his professors. Popper was a mentor to Soros until Popper’s death in 1994. Two of Popper’s most influential teachings concerned “the open society,” and Fallibilism.

Fallibilism is the philosophical doctrine that all claims of knowledge could, in principle, be mistaken. (Then again, I could be wrong about that). The “open society” basically refers to a “test and evaluate” approach to social engineering. Regarding “open society” Roy Childs writes, “Since the Second World War, most of the Western democracies have followed Popper’s advice about piecemeal social engineering and democratic social reform, and it has gotten them into a grand mess.”

In 1956 Soros moved to New York City, where he worked on Wall Street, and started amassing his fortune. He specialized in hedge funds and currency speculation. Soros is absolutely ruthless, amoral, and clever in his business dealings, and quickly made his fortune. By the 1980s he was well on his way to becoming the global powerhouse that he is today.

In an article Kyle-Anne Shiver wrote for “The American Thinker” she says, “Soros made his first billion in 1992 by shorting the British pound with leveraged billions in financial bets, and became known as the man who broke the Bank of England. He broke it on the backs of hard-working British citizens who immediately saw their homes severely devalued and their life savings cut drastically, almost overnight.”

In 1994 Soros crowed in “The New Republic”, that “the former Soviet Empire is now called the Soros Empire.” The Russia-gate scandal in 1999, which almost collapsed the Russian economy, was labeled by Rep. Jim Leach, then head of the House Banking Committee, to be “one of the greatest social robberies in human history. The “Soros Empire” indeed. In 1997 Soros almost destroyed the economies of Thailand and Malaysia. At the time, Malaysia’s Prime Minister, Mahathir Mohammad, called Soros “a villain, and a moron.” Thai activist Weng Tojirakarn said, “We regard George Soros as a kind of Dracula. He sucks the blood from the people.”

The website Greek National Pride reports, “Soros was part of the full court press that dismantled Yugoslavia and caused trouble in Georgia, Ukraine and Myanmar [Burma]. Calling himself a philanthropist, Soros’ role is to tighten the ideological stranglehold of globalization and the New World Order while promoting his own financial gain. He is without conscience; a capitalist who functions with absolute amorality.”

France has upheld an earlier conviction against Soros for felony insider trading. Soros was fined $2.9 million. Recently, his native Hungary fined Soros $2.2 million for “illegal market manipulation.” Elizabeth Crum writes that the Hungarian economy has been in a state of transition as the country seeks to become more financially stable and westernized. Soros deliberately driving down the share price of its largest bank put Hungary’s economy into a wicked tailspin, one from which it is still trying to recover.

My point here is that Soros is a planetary parasite. His grasp, greed, and gluttony have a global reach. But what about America? Soros told Australia ‘s national newspaper “The Australian”, “America, as the centre of the globalized financial markets, was sucking up the savings of the world. This is now over. The game is out,” he said, adding that the time has come for “a very serious adjustment” in American’s consumption habits. He implied that he was the one with the power to bring this about.”

Soros: “World financial crisis was “stimulating” and “in a way, the culmination of my life’s work.”

Obama has recently promised 10 billion of our tax dollars to Brazil, in order to give them a leg-up in expanding their offshore oil fields. Obama’s largesse towards Brazil came shortly after his political financial backer, George Soros, invested heavily in Brazilian oil (Pet rob ras).

Tait Trussel writes, “The Pet rob ras loan may be a windfall for Soros and Brazil, but it is a bad deal for the
US. The American Petroleum Institute estimates that oil exploration in the US could create 160,000 new, well-paying jobs, as well as $1.7 trillion in revenues to federal, state, and local governments, all while fostering greater energy security and independence.”

A blog you might want to keep an eye on is SorosWatch.com. Their mission: “This blog is dedicated to all who have suffered due to the ruthless financial pursuits of George Soros. Your stories are many and varied, but the theme is the same: the destructive power of greed without conscience. We pledge to tirelessly watch Soros wherever he goes and to print the truth in the hope that he will one day be made to stop preying upon the world’s poor, that justice will be served.”

Back to America. Soros has been actively working to destroy America from the inside out for some years now. People have been warning us. Two years ago, news sources reported that “Soros [is] an extremist who wants open borders, a one-world foreign policy, legalized drugs, euthanasia, and on and on. This is off-the-chart dangerous.” In 1997 Rachel Ehrenfeld wrote, “Soros uses his philanthropy to change or more accurately deconstruct the moral values and attitudes of the Western world, and particularly of the American people. His “open society” is not about freedom; it is about license. His vision rejects the notion of ordered liberty, in favor of a PROGRESSIVE ideology of rights and entitlements.”

Perhaps the most important of these “whistle blowers” are David Horowitz and Richard Poe. Their book “The Shadow Party” outlines in detail how Soros hijacked the Democratic Party, and now owns it lock, stock, and barrel. Soros has been packing the Democratic Party with radicals, and ousting moderate Democrats for years. The Shadow Party became the Shadow Government, which recently became the Obama Administration.

DiscoverTheNetworks.org (another good source) writes, “By his [Soros’] own admission, he helped engineer coups in Slovakia, Croatia, Georgia, and Yugoslavia. When Soros targets a country for “regime change”, he begins by creating a shadow government, a fully formed government-in-exile, ready to assume power when the opportunity arises. The Shadow Party he has built in America greatly resembles those he has created in other countries prior to instigating a coup.”

November 2008 edition of the German magazine “Der Spiegel,” in which Soros gives his opinion on what the next POTUS (President of the US) should do after taking office. “I think we need a large stimulus package.” Soros thought that around $600 billion would be about right. Soros also said that, “I think Obama presents us a great opportunity to finally deal with global warming and energy dependence. The US needs a cap and trade system with auctioning of licenses for emissions rights.”

Although Soros doesn’t (yet) own the Republican Party, like he does the Democrats, make no mistake, his tentacles are spread throughout the Republican Party as well.

Soros is a partner in the Carlyle Group where he has invested more than $100 million. According to an article by “The Baltimore Chronicle’s” Alice Cherbonnier, the Carlye Group is run by “a veritable who’s who of former Republican leaders,” from CIA man Frank Carlucci, to CIA head and ex-President George Bush, Sr.

In late 2006, Soros bought about 2 million shares of Halliburton, Dick Cheney’s old stomping grounds. When the Democrats and Republicans held their conventions in 2000, Soros held Shadow Party conventions in the same cities, at the same time. In 2008, Soros donated $5,000,000,000 (that’s five billion) to the Democratic National Committee, DNC, to insure Obama’s win and wins for many other Alinsky trained Radical Rules Anti-American Socialist. George has been contributing a $billion plus to the DNC since Clinton came on the scene.

Soros has dirtied both sides of the aisle, trust me. And if that weren’t bad enough, he has long held connections with the CIA. And I mustn’t forget to mention Soros’ involvement with the MSM (Main Stream Media), the entertainment industry (e.g. he owns 2.6 million shares of Time Warner), and the various political advertising organizations he funnels millions to. In short, George Soros controls or influences most of the MSM. Little wonder they ignore the TEA PARTY, Soro’s NEMESIS.

As Matthew Vadum writes, “The liberal billionaire-turned-philanthropist has been buying up media properties for years in order to drive home his message to the American public that they are too materialistic, too wasteful, too selfish, and too stupid to decide for themselves how to run their own lives.”

Richard Poe writes, “Soros’ private philanthropy, totaling nearly $5 billion, continues undermining America ‘s traditional Western values. His giving has provided funding of abortion rights, atheism, drug legalization, sex education, euthanasia, feminism, gun control, globalization, mass immigration, gay marriage and other radical experiments in social engineering.”

Poe continues, “Through his global web of Open Society Institutes and Open Society Foundations, Soros has spent 25 years recruiting, training, indoctrinating and installing a network of loyal operatives in 50 countries, placing them in positions of influence and power in media, government, finance and academia.”

Without Soros’ money, would the Saul Alinsky’s Chicago machine still be rolling? Would SEIU, ACORN, and La Raza still be pursuing their nefarious activities? Would Big Money and lobbyists still be corrupting government? Would our college campuses still be retirement homes for 1960s radicals?

America stands at the brink of an abyss, and that fact is directly attributable to Soros. Soros has vigorously, cleverly, and insidiously planned the ruination of America and his puppet, Barack Obama is leading the way.

The words of Patrick Henry are apropos: “Is life so dear, or peace so sweet, as to be purchased at the price of chains and slavery? Forbid it, almighty God! I know not what course others may take, but as for me, give me liberty, or give me death!”

“I walked down the street in Barcelona , and suddenly discovered a terrible truth – Europe died in Auschwitz … We killed six million Jews and replaced them with 20 million Muslims. In Auschwitz we burned a culture, thought, creativity, talent. We destroyed the chosen people, truly chosen, because they produced great and wonderful people who changed the world.

The contribution of this people is felt in all areas of life: science, art, international trade, and above all, as the conscience of the world. These are the people we burned.

And under the pretense of tolerance, and because we wanted to prove to ourselves that we were cured of the disease of racism, we opened our gates to 20 million Muslims, who brought us stupidity and ignorance, religious extremism and lack of tolerance, crime and poverty, due to an unwillingness to work and support their families with pride.

They have blown up our trains and turned our beautiful Spanish cities into the third world, drowning in filth and crime.

Shut up in the apartments they receive free from the government, they plan the murder and destruction of their naive hosts.

And thus, in our misery, we have exchanged culture for fanatical hatred, creative skill for destructive skill, intelligence for backwardness and superstition.

We have exchanged the pursuit of peace of the Jews of Europe and their talent for a better future for their children, their determined clinging to life because life is holy, for those who pursue death, for people consumed by the desire for death for themselves and others, for our children and theirs.

What a terrible mistake was made by miserable Europe”.

The Jews are NOT promoting brain washing children in military training camps, teaching them how to blow themselves up and cause maximum deaths of Jews and other non Muslims. General Eisenhower Warned Us It is a matter of history that when the Supreme Commander of the Allied Forces, General Dwight Eisenhower, found the victims of the death camps he ordered all possible photographs to be taken, and for the German people from surrounding villages to be ushered through the camps and even made to bury the dead.

Thanksgiving

This has been an interesting month for us. A little history first.

Twenty-four years ago this month (Nov, 1986) I was on a business trip to Texas when I began to experience breathing difficulties. As a trained firefighter/paramedic, and an instructor to boot, I knew what I was facing. What to do? Practice denial of course. I was, after all, “bullet-proof.”

So, off I went from San Antonio to Houston for another meeting and then home to Washington, DC. I walked into my house, told my wife that I didn’t feel well and was going to the hospital. No, she didn’t need to take me, I’d be OK and call her when I found out what it was. Forty-five minutes later I was in cardiac ICU. Note to self; don’t do that.

A week later I moved up on the waiting list for an angioplasty. They found a 90%> block and “ballooned” it. I was told to change my life style and that the procedure would last me for about 8-10 years.

On November 10th, 2010, I was experiencing some familiar breath shortage issues and went to my Cardiologist for a check up. My symptoms moved them to make an appointment for a heart catheter the next day, especially when they found that the last one had been 24 years earlier! My sense was that I had a block and that they could place a stint and let me go back to work. It is a much simpler procedure now and hospitals have entire wings dedicated to it, not like 1986 when it was a rapidly emerging technology.

The heart catheter procedure lets you remain awake while the catheter is inserted into your femoral artery and a camera lets you see the progress. You feel nothing and looking at your insides can be very entertaining…unless there is a problem, which we found ten minutes into the operation. It seems that the original angioplasty worked well, and gave me much more that the suggested 8-10 years, but nothing is forever. I now needed a minimum of seven stints! (Small metal spring-like devices that press against the offending junk and open up your blood vessels. The old balloons were just that, a balloon on the tip of the catheter that, when expanded, did the same thing. )

That is too much metal in your chest so my only option was to have a CABG (Coronary Artery Bypass Graft), and it ended up that I needed five! (I guess they would call that a pentuple?)

Without the details I can tell you that having your chest opened for five hours leaves a mark. When they are done you have more tubes and wires emanating from your body that you can imagine. (The monitors are behind you so you never get the full appreciation of the level of technology in play.) So, of course, they get you out of bed within 24 hours of the operation! Each day got better and each day I got, and get, stronger.

The body is an amazing creation. It is beautifully and wondrously made in the Image and Likeness of our Creator. Given the right foods it will even heal itself! Sadly, very few of us are consistent with the right food and the food that we now have available to us has been so adulterated with hormones and radiation that the healthy parts are mostly rendered impotent. Nineteen years of this input messed my ticker up. Why only nineteen? Because, five years ago I married Karen and she has been changing my diet to a more healthy one. I firmly believe that this bought me some additional time.

And prayer. I have been over whelmed with the prayers and concerns of so many people I just can’t get my head around it. When I entered the operating room I had no concerns whatsoever. I knew that I knew that all was well and that other than a lengthy recovery I was completely and totally covered, protected and loved. I have never felt that level of peace.

And now it is surgery plus five weeks which included Thansgiving. To try and express what I feel would not be possible. I am grateful beyond words and thankful to be alive, surrounded by my family and friends and on my way to 20-30 more years of what ever God has in store for me.

Civic Duty

Today is election day, 2010. It is expected to have the largest turnout for an off-year election (the name given to non-presidential voting years) in about five decades. It would be larger yet if our education system still taught civics.

On my Facebook visit today I read several posts from some young eligible voters who were not bothering to vote because “they (politicians) can’t be trusted or will change when they get to Washington.” Another said that she did not have any civic duty to vote and another lauded his freedom to choose to vote or not to vote. Interesting use of freedom, no?

Now, I must agree that our freedoms do include the freedom to say no, but let’s get real here. Their refusal to participate in the process makes them part of the problem, not part of the solution.

On the other side of this is the abject ignorance of the electorate! Recent TV shows have had people like John Stossell (currently FoxNews) asking people on the streets if they know who certain easily recognizable celebrities (like the V.P. of the U.S. for example) and they had no clue. Show them a picture of a teenybopper TV personality and they nailed it every time. They showed no embarrassment over their ignorance but rather pride in knowing the TV person. These are people who get their news from the Comedy channel. Why am I surprised? Voting for them not be a choice, it should be illegal.

The founding fathers originally designed the voting process so that only free male landowners had the right to vote. This was to assure that people with an investment in the country actually ran it. I’m not suggesting that we return completely to that era but for goodness sake, we need to change something!

Are elected officials corruptible? Certainly. Are they all corrupt? No. Character counts and character will ultimately unmask the man, or woman for that matter. So, when you vote you have a responsibility to know who and what you are voting for. Blind acceptance of the stuff presented in the voting booth is no longer an option. Study it or do us all a favor and stay home.

It’s that abject ignorance thingy.

Cruisin with Celebrity

Karen and I recently returned from our first cruise together. We left from Ft. Lauderdale on September 12th and visited Grand Cayman, Cozumel, Mexico, Costa Mayo, Mexico and Roatan, Honduras. We sailed on the Celebrity Solstice and had a great time. We encourage you to follow our lead and do this at least once, it was a wonderful vacation.

I can’t say enough about the cruise, the on-board personnel and the Captain, who showed his leadership above and beyond just being the master of the vessel. On Wednesday night a passenger attempted suicide by jumping into the VERY dark sea at 1AM. The crew marked the spot on the GPS, lit up the area and found him! A lifeboat was lowered but the jumper resisted the rescue, whereupon the captain dove in, subdued him and saved his life. The jumper was handcuffed and placed in the ship’s brig (they have two). He was sent ashore in Roatan and we continued on our way.

Imagine this. The captain of a major cruise line ship with 2,800 passengers and 1,300 crew took command down to the level of jumping into the sea in the middle of the night to save a passenger, regardless of the passenger’s desire to be saved. I think the crew would follow him anywhere. We would certainly sail with him anywhere.

I have always functioned under the dictum that there is customer service, good customer service and extraordinary customer service, the latter being the bar that few attain but some at least make an attempt. Celebrity has mastered these in all forms, at least at sea.

We booked another cruise with Celebrity for next year before we left the ship and we’re looking forward to it. If you would care to join us, we leave Ft. Lauderdale and will cross the Atlantic ending up in Rome, Italy. After that we will stay on and cruise the eastern Mediterranean. It is a 28 day trip but priceless. We will visit the Azores, Spain, France Italy, Greece and Turkey; both the European side and the Asian side. We are calling it our 20th anniversary trip. I know, its a little early, but what the heck. Want to join us?

Roger Clemens and Congress

A friend of my wife vented today and wrapped her frustration with Congress in a tight wad that formed a cannonball. I just had to pass along her thoughts as they parallel mine.

“While driving home yesterday I was taken aback when I heard that baseball great, Roger Clemens, is being indicted for lying to Congress and could go to prison for 30 years. This email is by no means a defense of lying or a defense of steroids but I found it absolutely incredible when I heard the words “lying to Congress.” I actually found myself laughing. Was the announcer talking about the same Congress that we have in Washington? I am having a difficult time wrapping my mind around the picture of Barney Frank, Chris Dodd, Maxine Waters, Charlie Rangel, and countless others whose names escape me now who are congressmen and women sitting in judgment of someone who lied about taking steroids when they lie, deceive, and steal from us every day.

Are we talking about the same folks who don’t report all of their earnings, don’t pay their taxes, or feather their own nests or that of their spouses with government contracts, sitting in judgment of Roger Clemens? Please clarify for me…are we talking about the same people who by the sin of omission allow our borders to be a sieve and wage war against the state of Arizona for trying to protect her citizens? Surely I am mistaken that we’re not talking about the likes of Nancy Pelosi who wants to investigate 911 families or anyone else who is opposed to the victory mosque on ground zero but will not investigate who is funding the mosque.

Congress should be indicted by the American people! If we cannot throw them in jail for 30 years then we need to throw them out of office forever and push for term limits. Every day I get more incensed at the absolute disdain our “public servants” have for us – for you and me, the American people. I cannot tell you what to do but I just had to do something to get this subject out and discussed in the clear light of day.

I will be praying, and I will write my congressmen and then wait for their form letters on the supplies that we have paid for which will undoubtedly ignore any thing I said in my letter. I heard a quote on Turning Point Monday morning related to illness and it was something like “don’t deny the diagnosis but defy the verdict.” I think we can all diagnose what is wrong with our country but please don’t sit quietly by and accept the verdict.”

I WAS WATCHING Greta Van Facelift on Fox the other night, and she and her guests made me talk back to the TV. Shout back, actually. Nothing witty or trenchant, you understand, just something like, “Oh, come on!” Now, to be honest, it was late, and I was downstairs alone, and I was a little, what’s the word . . . loaded, yes, that’s the word. I was a little shined up. A little spiffed and a little miffed, and I shouted something and angrily turned off the remote. I don’t know exactly how angrily a remote can be turned off, but as angrily as you can push a pfennig-sized piece of round plastic, that’s how angrily I did it. Then I walked back to the bar, made myself one-for-the-stairs (as opposed to one-for-the-road) and read some P.G. Wodehouse to restore my cheery nature. But back to the freshly-tightened Greta.

Her guests were (INSERT INDISTINGUISHABLE ARAB NAME), from Hamas, and their attorney, Stanley Cohen. No, that’s not a joke. Would that it were. Stanley Cohen, the attorney for Hamas. Check that handle again: Stanley Cohen. I mean, if you tried to make up a better name than that, you couldn’t do it. Let’s give it a shot, though, shall we? Irving Lefkowitz. Nah, too obvious. Lew Fishman. No, no, sounds like a carpet salesman. Isaac Bashevis Singer? Now I’m reaching. Nope, you just can’t beat good ol’ Stan Cohen. Yes, Stanley Cohen, folks, a hard-left, righteously indignant true-believer, an honors graduate from the William Kunstler School of Just-Not-Getting-It-And-Never-Will, who had flown all the way from New York to sit next to his wonderful client over there in not the land of milk and honey. Stanley Cohen. A man who, if he listened very carefully, would no doubt hear voices in the next room planning to blow the eyes out of more of his nieces and nephews. Stanley Cohen, and even typing that name right now and remembering this horrible man damning his own people again and again and again, I crack a nervous smile, because they’re my people, too, and, God help me, if I didn’t laugh, I think I might cry.

Oddly enough, out of the three of them, the homunculus from Hamas didn’t bother me at all. I mean, if you think about it, why should he bother any American? We know exactly who he is and, in a way, we should be grateful for that. Because if we’re only willing to absorb their own words–nevermind their demonic deeds–he and his brethren have a perfectly uncomplicated point of view and agenda, and their clarity should give us our own clarity, and wouldn’t that be refreshing? You want us dead? Well, now, isn’t that a funny coincidence. Guess what we want?

My point is, if American TV calls up and wants to put these philanthropists on, who could blame them for saying, “Sure!” I can just see them bursting out laughing and slapping each other on the back. (“They’re going to put us on Fox TV! I told you terror works! And I’ll bet their Green Room beats the snot out of Al Jazeera. I mean, please, how many olives can you eat?”) If we’re stupid enough to do that, I don’t blame them for taking us up on it. All they have to do is take a few minutes away from packing rusty nails around the C4, pick one of their guys who looks, relatively, the least like a vicious scumbag, borrow a suit, and send him forth to smile for the cameras. But let’s leave the newly-stretched Greta for a moment, as well as our friends Stanley and Ishmael (no joke, his real name). A brief overview of the situation is always valuable, so as a service to all Americans who still don’t get it, I now offer you the story of the Middle East in just a few paragraphs, which is all you really need. Don’t thank me. I’m a giver. Here we go:

The Palestinians want their own country. There’s just one thing about that: There are no Palestinians. It’s a made up word. Israel was called Palestine for two thousand years. Like “Wiccan,” “Palestinian” sounds ancient but is really a modern invention. Before the Israelis won the land in war, Gaza was owned by Egypt, and there were no “Palestinians” then, and the West Bank was owned by Jordan, and there were no “Palestinians” then. As soon as the Jews took over and started growing oranges as big as basketballs, what do you know, say hello to the “Palestinians,” weeping for their deep bond with their lost “land” and “nation.” So for the sake of honesty, let’s not use the word “Palestinian” any more to describe these delightful folks, who dance for joy at our deaths until someone points out they’re being taped. Instead, let’s call them what they are: “Other Arabs From The Same General Area Who Are In Deep Denial About Never Being Able To Accomplish Anything In Life And Would Rather Wrap Themselves In The Seductive Melodrama Of Eternal Struggle And Death.” I know that’s a bit unwieldy to expect to see on CNN. How about this, then: “Adjacent Jew-Haters.”

Okay, so the Adjacent Jew-Haters want their own country. Oops, just one more thing. No, they don’t. They could’ve had their own country any time in the last thirty years, especially two years ago at Camp David. But if you have your own country, you have to have traffic lights and garbage trucks and Chambers of Commerce, and, worse, you actually have to figure out some way to make a living. That’s no fun. No, they want what all the other Jew-Haters in the region want: Israel. They also want a big pile of dead Jews, of course–that’s where the real fun is–but mostly they want Israel. Why? For one thing, trying to destroy Israel–or “The Zionist Entity” as their textbooks call it–for the last fifty years has allowed the rulers of Arab countries to divert the attention of their own people away from the fact that they’re the blue-ribbon most illiterate, poorest, and tribally backward on God’s Earth, and if you’ve ever been around God’s Earth, you know that’s really saying something. It makes me roll my eyes every time one of our pundits waxes poetic about the great history and culture of the Muslim Mideast. Unless I’m missing something, the Arabs haven’t given anything to the world since Algebra, and, by the way, thanks a hell of a lot for that one.

Chew this around and spit it out: Five hundred million Arabs; five million Jews. Think of all the Arab countries as a football field, and Israel as a pack of matches sitting in the middle of it. And now these same folks swear that if Israel gives them half of that pack of matches, everyone will be pals. Really? Wow, what neat news. Hey, but what about the string of wars to obliterate the tiny country and the constant din of rabid blood oaths to drive every Jew into the sea? Oh, that? We were just kidding.

My friend Kevin Rooney made a gorgeous point the other day: Just reverse the numbers. Imagine five hundred million Jews and five million Arabs. I was stunned at the simple brilliance of it. Can anyone picture the Jews strapping belts of razor blades and dynamite to themselves? Of course not. Or marshalling every fiber and force at their disposal for generations to drive a tiny Arab state into the sea? Nonsense. Or dancing for joy at the murder of innocents? Impossible. Or spreading and believing horrible lies about the Arabs baking their bread with the blood of children? Disgusting. No, as you know, left to themselves in a world of peace, the worst Jews would ever do to people is debate them to death.

Mr. Bush, God bless him, is walking a tightrope. I understand that with vital operations coming up against Iraq and others, it’s in our interest, as Americans, to try to stabilize our Arab allies as much as possible, and, after all, that can’t be much harder than stabilizing a roomful of supermodels who’ve just had their drugs taken away. However, in any big-picture strategy, there’s always a danger of losing moral weight. We’ve already lost some. After September 11 our president told us and the world he was going to root out all terrorists and the countries that supported them. Beautiful. Then the Israelis, after months and months of having the equivalent of an Oklahoma City every week (and then every day) start to do the same thing we did, and we tell them to show restraint. If America were being attacked with an Oklahoma City every day, we would all very shortly be screaming for the administration to just be done with it and kill everything south of the Mediterranean and east of the Jordan. (Hey, wait a minute, that’s actually not such a bad id . . . uh, that is, what a horrible thought, yeah, horrible.)

There’s bad news on the losing moral weight front, and the signs are out there. Last week, the day after Secretary Powell left on his mission (whatever that was), the Los Angeles Times ran its lead editorial in one hundred percent support of the trip and the pressure he and President Bush were putting on Israel. Here’s a good rule of thumb: If the Los Angeles Times thinks you’re doing a great job, everything you’re doing is wrong, stupid and mortally dangerous. If they think everything you’re doing is wrong, stupid and mortally dangerous, you’re doing a great job, and, in fact, your chances are probably very good for getting on the fast track for sainthood.

So, now, back to Greta. You know what made me mad enough to shout? You might not even think it was that big a thing.

After the show she said to these guys, “Thank you, gentlemen, for being my guests.” “Gentlemen.” “Guests.” “My guests.” That’s what it’s come to with these non-judgmental hosts and hostesses. Nice, huh? “Thank you, Mr. Stalin, sir, for being so gracious in giving us your valuable time.” “My eternal gratitude, Chairman Mao, for taking precious moments away from your splendid Five-Year Plan and visiting with us in this most convivial way.”

And I winced, and grunted, and shouted. Oh, yeah, and made that drink.

I mean, please, folks. In 1941, did reporters feel it was their duty to give equal time to Hitler and Hirohito? Would Stanley Cohen have represented them? Ok, Stanley probably would have, but would any American have stood still while he told us about it?
